Jira: https://browserstack.atlassian.net/browse/PPLT-6241

Problem

  1. CLI address (pre-existing). The SDK reads only PERCY_CLI_API, but percy exec --port N exports PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, and per review on PPLT-6233: Export CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS and add snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth cli#2466 the CLI won't export PERCY_CLI_API. On a non-default port the SDK disables itself and the script exits 0 with an empty build.
  2. CDP on Remote (caused by Selenium 4.28+). execute_cdp_cmd exists on every Remote driver, but only a ChromiumRemoteConnection understands it. With browserName: "Chrome" on Automate, every resize sends a failing executeCdpCommand before falling back.
  3. Certification. CI was capped at selenium<4.28, so 4.50 was untested. Lifting the cap hung Test (3.9) and Test (3.10) for 6h.
  4. Feature parity S1 (pre-existing). Responsive capture resized the window, so Edge posted 492/1272 for 375/1280 and Firefox stopped at 500 (the OS minimum window width).
  5. Feature parity S2 (pre-existing). Closed shadow roots were captured on Chrome only.

Fix

  • Address: PERCY_CLI_API → PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS → http://localhost:5338 (an empty string counts as unset).
  • CDP rejection memo: a driver that rejects CDP at driver level (executeCdpCommand / /cdp/execute "unrecognised/unknown command") goes into a WeakSet, and CDP isn't retried for it. The check reads the executor's command table, so it doesn't depend on assert text that python -O strips.
  • S1, exact width:
    • Mechanisms, in order:
      1. CDP on any Chromium browser (case-insensitive chrome/chromium/msedge/microsoftedge/chrome-headless-shell). Firefox is never sent CDP.
      2. BiDi browsingContext.setViewport when the session has webSocketUrl (Selenium ≥4.32).
      3. A border-corrected window resize, with a one-time warning when it can't reach the width.
    • Restore clears the override instead of re-applying it, which fixes an emulation leak.
    • Opt out with snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth: false (PPLT-6233: Export CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS and add snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth cli#2466).
  • S2, closed roots: CDP, then BiDi (includeShadowTree: 'all'), then classic Get Element Shadow Root.
    • The classic path runs on local drivers only and is capped by PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS. Remote sessions skip it unless PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true.
    • A None result (Safari) is skipped. On Selenium 3 this is a no-op.
  • CI hang (test harness, not the SDK): from 4.28 the Firefox path reached a debug log(). The test never mocked /percy/log, and httpretty passed the request through to the live CLI. Its pass-through recv() blocks until the server closes the keep-alive connection, which never happens, so the request's timeout had no effect.
    • New enable_httpretty() helper always registers /percy/log.
    • Job-level timeout-minutes: 30.
    • The cap is lifted to selenium>=4: 4.28–4.36 need Python ≥3.9, 4.37+ need ≥3.10.
  • README documents the address order, exact widths with webSocketUrl, and the closed-shadow env vars.

Testing

  • CI (run): Test 3.8 (Selenium 4.27.1), 3.9 (4.36.0) and 3.10 (4.51.0) pass in about 2 min each. Lint, CodeQL and Semgrep pass.
  • Local: make test on 4.50.0; 97 unit tests; coverage 100%; pylint 10/10.
  • Results (posted innerWidth for 375 / 1280, macOS, Selenium 4.50):
Browser Before After Closed roots
Edge 492 / 1272 375 / 1280 (CDP) ✗ → ✓
Firefox + BiDi 500 / 1280 375 / 1280 (BiDi) ✗ → ✓
Firefox, no BiDi 500 / 1280 500 / 1280 + warning ✗ → ✓ (classic)
Chrome 375 / 1280 375 / 1280 ✓

Release notes

  • Baselines shift once for Edge, for Firefox with BiDi, and for pages with closed shadow roots.
  • In exact mode the first width is always applied.

…lenium 4.28+

- Fall back to PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS (exported by `percy exec --port`) when
  PERCY_CLI_API is unset.
- Compare browserName case-insensitively for CDP decisions.
- Remember drivers whose CDP command is rejected ("Unrecognised command") and
skip CDP for them afterwards instead of failing every resize.
- Drop the <4.28 Selenium cap in the dev/CI requirements.

Walkthrough

Snapshot capture now supports a server-address fallback, multiple closed-shadow-root retrieval strategies, and exact responsive viewport resizing with restoration. Tests and documentation cover the new behavior, and the test job has a 30-minute timeout.

Changes: Snapshot capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve the CLI API address
percy/snapshot.py, tests/test_snapshot_units.py, README.md
The endpoint lookup checks PERCY_CLI_API, then PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, then http://localhost:5338. Tests and documentation cover the lookup order.
Retrieve and expose closed shadow roots
percy/snapshot.py, tests/test_snapshot_units.py, README.md
Capture selects CDP, negotiated BiDi, or classic WebDriver retrieval, subject to driver and configuration limits. Serialization and responsive capture expose roots after readiness. Tests and documentation cover the strategies and restrictions.
Select and restore responsive viewports
percy/snapshot.py, tests/test_snapshot_units.py, requirements.txt, README.md, .github/workflows/test.yml
Responsive capture selects CDP, BiDi, or window resizing, verifies exact widths by default, and restores the mechanisms used. Tests cover selection and restoration. Selenium guidance is updated, and the test job has a 30-minute timeout.
Validate capture setup and restoration
tests/test_snapshot.py
Snapshot tests register the Percy log mock and verify restoration of the original viewport after reload.

[Medium] Comment misstates Selenium's Python floor: the 3.9 job now gets 4.36.0

Selenium 4.28.0–4.36.0 declare requires_python >=3.9; only 4.37.0+ needs 3.10. So the 3.9 CI job resolves 4.36.0, the version the removed comment said wedged geckodriver on the responsive test.

Suggestion: Correct the comment, and confirm Test (3.9) and Test (3.10) pass without hanging. If 3.9 wedges, use selenium>=4,<4.28; python_version<"3.10" plus selenium>=4; python_version>="3.10".

[Low] Rejection markers are broader than a driver-level rejection

'unknown method' is generic. A single unsupported CDP method would disable CDP for the whole session, for both resize and shadow-DOM capture, because the memo is shared. Separately, under python -O Selenium's assert is stripped, so the rejection surfaces as a marker-less TypeError and the driver is never remembered (degraded, not broken).

Suggestion: Require executecdpcommand in the message, or drop 'unknown method'.

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #277 • Head: 5617a95 • Reviewers: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review, stack-code-reviewer, stack-percy-docs-reviewer

Summary

The CLI address now falls back to PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, which percy exec --port N exports. The SDK remembers drivers whose remote rejects CDP (Selenium 4.28+ "Unrecognised command executeCdpCommand") and stops sending them CDP for both the resize and closed-shadow-DOM paths. The test environment's selenium<4.28 cap is removed.

Findings

  • File: .claude/knowledge/ → harness stacks/stack-domain-percy-web-sdks/knowledge/ (flow-snapshot-selenium.md, FEATURE-FLAGS.md, learnings.md)

  • Severity: High

  • Reviewer: stack-percy-docs-reviewer

  • Issue: This is a material contract change and the knowledge base doesn't reflect it. The new behaviour is the CLI address resolution order PERCY_CLI_API → PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS → default, and the CDP rejection memo with its case rules (shadow DOM matches Chrome case-insensitively; resize keeps the exact 'chrome' match).

    • FEATURE-FLAGS.md lists neither PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS nor PERCY_CLI_API.
    • learnings.md:10 wrongly says the Python port doesn't do CDP resize.
    • The CDP section of flow-snapshot-selenium.md covers JS only.

The reviewer could not open the KB PR itself, for two reasons. Writes to the shared checkout were blocked in this background session. And roll-kb-pr.sh defaults to a non-existent stacks/stack-domain-percy-selenium-python/ folder instead of the shared stack-domain-percy-web-sdks stack. The code itself has no defect here.

  • Suggestion: Update the three files in stacks/stack-domain-percy-web-sdks/knowledge/, either by hand or by re-running the docs reviewer with PERCY_HARNESS_STACK_DIR=stacks/stack-domain-percy-web-sdks from a writable checkout. Add a drift item to audit the Ruby, Java and .NET ports for the same PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS gap. Separately, fix roll-kb-pr.sh stack-dir detection for repos that share a multi-repo stack.

  • File: requirements.txt:1

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review (corroborated by stack-code-reviewer)

  • Issue: The new comment says Selenium 4.28+ needs Python ≥ 3.10, so the 3.8 and 3.9 jobs resolve 4.27.x. That's wrong. PyPI requires_python is >=3.9 for 4.28.0–4.36.0 and >=3.10 only from 4.37.0, so the 3.9 job now installs 4.36.0. That is exactly the version the removed comment said wedged geckodriver on the responsive test. The wait_for_resize=False and settle changes may have fixed that, but this PR doesn't show it, and Test (3.9) and Test (3.10) were still pending at review time.

  • Suggestion: Correct the comment (4.28 needs ≥ 3.9, 4.37 needs ≥ 3.10). Confirm Test (3.9) and Test (3.10) go green without hanging before merge. If 3.9 wedges, add an environment marker: selenium>=4,<4.28; python_version<"3.10" / selenium>=4; python_version>="3.10".

  • File: percy/snapshot.py:53

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack-code-reviewer

  • Issue: _CDP_REJECTION_MARKERS includes the generic 'unknown method'. A CDP-capable driver that rejects one method would then disable CDP for the whole session, and because the memo is shared, for both resize and shadow-DOM capture.

  • Suggestion: Match only driver-level rejection, e.g. require executecdpcommand in the message, or drop 'unknown method'.

  • File: percy/snapshot.py:511

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review

  • Issue: The comment still says the shadow-DOM guard mirrors the resize guard "(browserName == 'chrome')", but the two now deliberately differ: _is_chrome is case-insensitive here, while resize keeps the exact match.

  • Suggestion: Reword it to state the intentional asymmetry.

  • File: percy/snapshot.py:53

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review

  • Issue: Detection depends on Selenium's assert command_info is not None, "Unrecognised command …". Under python -O the assert is stripped, the error becomes a TypeError with no marker, and the memo never records the driver. Behaviour degrades to the existing per-call fallback but does not break.

  • Suggestion: Optional: accept it and note it in the comment, or handle that TypeError shape too.

  • File: README.md

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review

  • Issue: The README doesn't document PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS or PERCY_CLI_API.

  • Suggestion: Optional: add them to the README's env section.

Checked and not a defect: one reviewer asked whether the inner raise in change_window_dimension_and_wait escapes. It doesn't: the outer except Exception catches it and falls back to set_window_size (snapshot.py:931–938).

Cross-SDK follow-up (non-gating): check the other non-JS ports (selenium-java/ruby/.NET, playwright-python/java/.NET, capybara). Any that read only PERCY_CLI_API will miss percy exec --port N.

Verdict: FAIL — the only High is the unremediated knowledge-base gap. The code change is sound. Fix the KB entries, then confirm the Python 3.9 and 3.10 CI jobs pass.

RaghavsBrowserStack and others added 5 commits October 27, 2026 19:30
Responsive capture now sets each width exactly: CDP for the whole Chromium
family (case-insensitive browserName, so Edge too), then WebDriver BiDi
browsingContext.setViewport when the session already has webSocketUrl
(Selenium 4.32+), then a window resize corrected once by the measured
innerWidth gap. Firefox never gets CDP. Restore clears the emulation instead
of re-applying the original size, which left pages emulated after capture.
exactResponsiveWidth (per snapshot, then .percy.yml) set to false keeps the
old exact-'chrome' mechanism, still with the clearing restore.

Closed shadow roots are exposed right before serialize (after readiness)
with the first available strategy: CDP on Chromium, BiDi
script.callFunction with includeShadowTree 'all', or classic Get Element
Shadow Root on local drivers (PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS cap, null
results skipped; remote sessions need PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true).
Skipped when disableShadowDOM is set; a no-op on Selenium 3.

CDP rejection is only remembered for a driver-level executeCdpCommand
rejection, and the executor's command table is checked directly so the
guard still holds under python -O.

…nium 4.27

The requirements comment had the PyPI floors wrong (4.28-4.36 need Python
3.9, 4.37+ need 3.10). The uncapped test env hung tests.test_snapshot on
both Linux jobs that picked up a newer Selenium (4.36.0 on 3.9, 4.51.0 on
3.10), so a python_version marker would not have been enough; the cap goes
back to <4.28 until the hang is root-caused.

README now covers PERCY_CLI_API / PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, exact responsive
widths (webSocketUrl, exactResponsiveWidth) and the closed shadow root env
vars.

pylint cannot resolve the BiDi modules that only exist from Selenium 4.32,
and Python < 3.10 coverage misses a bare continue.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
From Selenium 4.28 every Remote driver, Firefox included, has
execute_cdp_cmd, so the closed-shadow-root path reached a debug log() in
tests that never mocked /percy/log. httpretty passes unmocked requests to
the live `percy exec` server and reads until it closes the keep-alive
connection, ignoring the request timeout, so the test run blocked until
the 6h job limit. Mock /percy/log in every httpretty setUp, run CI on the
latest Selenium each Python allows, and bound the job at 30 minutes.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

_verify_viewport_width can raise from an unguarded window resize and drop the snapshot.

The window-border correction runs whenever mechanism == 'window' and inner_width != width. It does not check the direction or size of the mismatch. The target width is width + (width - inner_width).

  • Trigger: the window does not shrink, or the browser enforces a minimum width. Example: width=375 and inner_width=1000 gives a target of -250.
  • Example: inner_width=500 gives a target of 250, which is below the OS minimum.
  • Failure: _resize_window retries once and then raises. Nothing in _verify_viewport_width or change_window_dimension_and_wait catches the error.
  • Consequence: the error propagates through capture_responsive_dom to percy_snapshot, and the whole snapshot is lost. Before this change, a resize that did not take effect produced a snapshot at the wrong width.

A border eats width, so inner_width is below width. Correct only in that case. Guard the resize so verification never fails the capture. Then the existing warning path handles the case where the viewport is wider than requested.

The existing tests still pass with this change. test_window_path_corrects_border_once uses 1272 for 1280. test_window_path_warns_once_per_session_when_still_wrong uses 500 for 375 and still logs one warning.

Review comment at @percy/snapshot.py around lines 1211 - 1219:
Update _verify_viewport_width to apply the window-border correction only when
inner_width is positive and less than the requested width. Guard the
_resize_window call so a resize failure is logged and returns to snapshot
verification instead of propagating and dropping the capture; leave the existing
warning path to handle a viewport that remains wider than requested.

Restore the viewport when responsive capture fails.

If resizing, driver.refresh(), or get_serialized_dom raises, capture_responsive_dom exits before _restore_viewport. percy_snapshot catches the exception but does not restore the viewport. A CDP or BiDi override can remain active for later user steps.

Wrap the width loop and debug dump in try/finally, and call _restore_viewport from the finally block.

Review comment at @percy/snapshot.py at line 1349:
Update capture_responsive_dom to wrap the responsive width-capture loop and
optional debug dump in a try/finally, calling _restore_viewport from finally so
the viewport is restored even if capture operations raise.
